Cuban Missile Crisis Ends — Soviet Missiles to Be Removed

Soviet Premier Khrushchev agreed to remove nuclear missiles from Cuba in exchange for a secret American pledge not to invade Cuba and to remove U.S. Jupiter missiles from Turkey. The world stepped back from the nuclear brink after 13 days.

The crisis led to the installation of the Moscow-Washington hotline and new arms control agreements, but also convinced the Soviets they needed nuclear parity — accelerating the arms race.

Outcome

Nuclear war averted; missiles removed; Cold War continues
