Naval Battle of Angamos

For five months the Huáscar under Admiral Grau had terrorised the Chilean coast, raiding ports and capturing transports. At Angamos a Chilean squadron finally trapped the ironclad in a pincer; a shell struck the Huáscar's conning tower and killed Grau instantly, and after a desperate fight the crippled ship was boarded and captured before her crew could scuttle her.

The capture of the Huáscar and death of Grau gave Chile undisputed command of the sea — the decisive strategic turning point of the war. With the coast now open to Chilean troop landings, the land campaigns of conquest could begin.

The Balkan Wars1912

Balkan League Declares War

Montenegro opened hostilities against the Ottoman Empire on October 8, 1912, with the other three Balkan League members — Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece — declaring war ten days later on October 17–18. The coordinated declaration stunned European chancelleries, which had been attempting to broker a settlement between the League and the Porte. Four separate armies totaling roughly 750,000 men mobilized almost simultaneously across a front stretching from Montenegro in the northwest to Thrace in the east.

The declarations transformed years of secret diplomacy and military planning into open warfare. The Balkan League's coordinated attack on multiple fronts overwhelmed Ottoman defensive capacity and began the process that would strip the empire of virtually all its European territory within months.

⚔️📍 Argonne Forest, France1918

Sergeant York — America's Greatest WWI Hero

Tennessee marksman Corporal Alvin York killed 28 German soldiers and captured 132 more almost single-handedly after being separated from his unit during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. York used his experience as a hunting marksman to pick off German soldiers one by one.

York received the Medal of Honor and became the most decorated American soldier of WWI, his story later inspiring the 1941 Gary Cooper film.

🕯️Yom Kippur War1973

IDF Counterattack on the Golan

With the Syrian breakthrough halted in the Valley of Tears, Israeli reserves streamed onto the Golan. Freshly mobilized armored brigades — many crews still wearing civilian clothes under their uniforms — slammed into Syrian formations. Bitter fighting erupted across the basalt plateau. By October 11, Israel had not only cleared all Syrian forces from the Golan but had pushed back to the 1967 ceasefire line. Hundreds of Syrian tanks, many intact and abandoned by fleeing crews, littered the plateau.

The four-day counterattack completely erased Syria's initial gains and established the operational conditions for Israel's advance into Syria proper. Iraqi and Jordanian expeditionary forces rushed to reinforce Syria were caught in the open and destroyed by Israeli armor. The ability to transition from desperate defense to overwhelming counterattack within 48 hours demonstrated the IDF's extraordinary adaptive capacity.

Battle of Beit Hanoun

Beit Hanoun, in the northeastern corner of Gaza, was one of the first urban centers penetrated during Israel's ground operation. IDF forces pushed through the town using armored engineering units to breach Hamas fortifications and clear buildings. Hamas fighters contested every block, using rocket-propelled grenades, improvised explosive devices, and anti-tank missiles from prepared positions. D9 armored bulldozers were used extensively to clear booby-trapped streets and demolish buildings from which snipers operated. The town was substantially devastated. This battle opened the corridor that allowed IDF forces to begin encircling Gaza City from the north.

Beit Hanoun demonstrated the tactical cost of Hamas's fortification strategy — it forced IDF into slow, casualty-intensive urban clearing. It also showcased the role of armored engineering: D9 bulldozers leading infantry, Trophy-equipped tanks providing overwatch, and tunnel-detection equipment probing beneath cleared buildings.

Northern Front — Israel-Hezbollah Escalation

From the day after October 7, Hezbollah began a sustained campaign of rocket, anti-tank missile, and drone attacks on northern Israel — displacing 60,000–80,000 Israelis from border communities. Israel retaliated with targeted strikes on Hezbollah commanders and infrastructure. The exchange gradually escalated through 2024. In July, Israel killed Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in a targeted strike in Beirut. On September 27, 2024, Israel killed Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah — the most powerful figure in Lebanon for 32 years — in a massive airstrike on Hezbollah's Beirut headquarters. In October, Israel launched a ground operation into southern Lebanon.

The northern front transformed the war from a Gaza-specific conflict into a regional one. Israel's sustained pressure on Hezbollah — culminating in Nasrallah's killing — represented the largest blow to the organization since its founding in 1982 and dramatically weakened Iran's most capable regional proxy.
