'The Star-Spangled Banner' Written After Fort McHenry
American lawyer Francis Scott Key, watching from a British ship while Fort McHenry was bombarded through the night, wrote the poem 'Defence of Fort M'Henry' after seeing the American flag still flying at dawn. The poem became the national anthem.
The resilience of Fort McHenry and Key's poem gave America its national anthem and one of its defining patriotic symbols.
