Operation Market Garden Fails — Bridge Too Far

The remnants of the British 1st Airborne Division were evacuated across the Rhine from Arnhem after nine days of fighting, having failed to hold the 'bridge too far.' Of 10,000 paratroopers, only 2,163 escaped; 1,485 were killed and 6,525 captured.

Market Garden's failure ended Allied hopes of ending the war in 1944 and consigned Europe to another winter of fighting.
