Abraham Lincoln Dies

President Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m. in a boarding house across from Ford's Theatre, never having regained consciousness after being shot the previous evening. Secretary of War Stanton said: 'Now he belongs to the ages.'

Lincoln's death transformed him from a controversial wartime president into a martyr and national icon, making it impossible for future generations to judge him as ordinary Americans had judged him in life.

Battle of Khartoum

Fighting erupted simultaneously across Khartoum on April 15, 2023, as RSF fighters — pre-positioned inside SAF bases and civilian neighborhoods — clashed with army units. The RSF seized control of the presidential palace, the state broadcaster, and major roads within hours. The SAF responded with airstrikes on RSF positions in residential areas of the capital. Khartoum International Airport became a contested battleground. Within weeks, the city of 6 million — once a functioning metropolitan center with cafes, universities, and a thriving civil society — was transformed into a combat zone.

Khartoum had not seen urban warfare since the 1885 Siege of Khartoum during the Mahdist War. The eruption of fighting in the capital of an African country of 45 million people — with direct implications for the entire region — was one of 2023's most significant geopolitical events. The international community's inability to stop the fighting or protect civilians reflected the limits of post-Cold War conflict resolution architecture.
