Battle of Formigny

At Formigny, the French used field artillery to solve the English longbow problem. French culverin cannon were placed to enfilade the English defensive line, forcing the archers to abandon their positions and charge the guns. As they did, French cavalry caught them in the open. The English army was annihilated. Of roughly 4,000 English soldiers, nearly all were killed or captured. It was the worst English defeat in France since the start of the war.

Formigny ended English rule in Normandy, which England had held since Henry V's conquests. The battle showed that gunpowder artillery had permanently changed the nature of medieval warfare, neutralizing the English longbow advantage that had dominated the conflict for a century. The loss of Normandy effectively ended England's ability to sustain the war.

Battle of Rain / Crossing of the Lech

Gustavus Adolphus forced a crossing of the Lech River into Bavaria under artillery cover, an extraordinary feat of military engineering. Count Tilly, attempting to hold the far bank, was struck by a cannonball that shattered his leg. He was carried from the field and died of his wounds twelve days later. The Swedish army poured into Bavaria.

The death of Tilly removed the Catholic League's most experienced and successful commander, opening Bavaria itself to Swedish invasion. Maximilian of Bavaria was forced to beg Wallenstein — recently dismissed and now indispensable — to return as Imperial generalissimo. The battle demonstrated Swedish superiority in combined-arms river crossing operations.

Abraham Lincoln Dies

President Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m. in a boarding house across from Ford's Theatre, never having regained consciousness after being shot the previous evening. Secretary of War Stanton said: 'Now he belongs to the ages.'

Lincoln's death transformed him from a controversial wartime president into a martyr and national icon, making it impossible for future generations to judge him as ordinary Americans had judged him in life.

Siege of Catubig

Hundreds of Filipino guerrillas besieged a 31-man detachment of the 43rd Infantry in the Catubig church convent on Samar, burning them out with flaming arrows and captured rifles. The survivors dug in on the riverbank for four days until a relief boat arrived; nineteen Americans died.

One of the guerrilla war's clearest Filipino victories, and an early warning of what Samar would become. The pattern — isolated garrisons, a hostile population, sudden annihilating attacks — would culminate at Balangiga a year later.

Battle of Khartoum

Fighting erupted simultaneously across Khartoum on April 15, 2023, as RSF fighters — pre-positioned inside SAF bases and civilian neighborhoods — clashed with army units. The RSF seized control of the presidential palace, the state broadcaster, and major roads within hours. The SAF responded with airstrikes on RSF positions in residential areas of the capital. Khartoum International Airport became a contested battleground. Within weeks, the city of 6 million — once a functioning metropolitan center with cafes, universities, and a thriving civil society — was transformed into a combat zone.

Khartoum had not seen urban warfare since the 1885 Siege of Khartoum during the Mahdist War. The eruption of fighting in the capital of an African country of 45 million people — with direct implications for the entire region — was one of 2023's most significant geopolitical events. The international community's inability to stop the fighting or protect civilians reflected the limits of post-Cold War conflict resolution architecture.
