Battle of Khartoum

April 15, 2023 – March 2025 · Khartoum Theater

SAF recaptured Khartoum in March 2025 after nearly two years of RSF occupation

April 15, 2023 – March 2025

The war began in Khartoum on April 15, 2023, and the RSF held most of the capital within days — occupying homes, hospitals, and ministries, and turning a city of six million into a battlefield. For nearly two years the SAF clung to northern Khartoum, Omdurman, and the army headquarters while the RSF looted the rest. The tide turned with a coordinated SAF offensive across Bahri, Khartoum, and Omdurman beginning in late 2024. In January 2025 the army expelled the RSF from Omdurman and retook the oil refinery north of the capital; on March 21, 2025 it recaptured the Presidential Palace, and by March 27 it held Khartoum. The city it recovered was substantially destroyed, its infrastructure stripped and its population dispersed.
