Battle of Chilcheollyang

Japanese agents fed Seoul a false report that a Japanese general could be intercepted at sea; Yi Sun-sin, reading it as a trap, refused the order to sail. He was arrested, tortured, stripped of rank, and reduced to a common soldier. His rival Won Gyun took the fleet out, was ambushed at night at Chilcheollyang, and lost virtually all of it. Won Gyun was killed. Thirteen ships escaped.

The only Korean naval defeat of the war, and it took a court intrigue to arrange it. In one night Korea threw away five years of Yi's work and the sea route was open again — Japan's second invasion could be supplied. The court, with nothing left, released Yi from prison and reappointed him to command the thirteen surviving ships.

Second Battle of Bull Run

Lee orchestrated a masterful double-envelopment near the same ground as First Bull Run. Jackson's corps marched 50 miles in two days to destroy Pope's massive supply depot at Manassas Junction, then lured Pope into attacking what appeared to be a vulnerable, isolated force. When Pope committed his troops against Jackson's entrenched line, Longstreet's corps — 30,000 men hidden just beyond a ridge — launched a devastating flank assault that rolled up the entire Union left. Pope's army retreated to Washington in disorder.

Lee's greatest strategic maneuver. The victory opened the way for his first invasion of the North, leading directly to Antietam. Pope was relieved of command and McClellan restored. The Confederacy's military position appeared stronger than at any other point in the war.

First Battle of El Alamein Ends — Rommel Halted

The First Battle of El Alamein ended inconclusively but achieved its vital objective: Rommel's Africa Korps was stopped just 66 miles from Alexandria. British forces under Auchinleck had fought Rommel to a standstill at the last defensible line before Egypt.

El Alamein marked the furthest extent of German advance in North Africa; Rommel never again threatened the Suez Canal, and within three months would be in retreat.

Battle of the Haji Pir Pass

To cut the infiltration routes, Indian troops stormed the strategic Haji Pir Pass, a key crossing on the ceasefire line, in a difficult mountain assault led with conspicuous daring. The capture of the pass sealed a major infiltration route into the Kashmir Valley.

Haji Pir was one of India's notable tactical successes of the war — though the pass was handed back to Pakistan under the postwar Tashkent settlement, a decision long resented in India.
