Joan of Arc Burned at the Stake
Joan of Arc, 19 years old, was burned at the stake in the Rouen marketplace after being convicted of heresy by a church court manipulated by the English. She reportedly called on Jesus as the flames rose; an English soldier claimed to have seen a dove fly from the flames.
Joan's martyrdom made her a French national symbol more powerful in death than in life; within 22 years France had expelled the English, and she was eventually canonized as a saint in 1920.
Outcome
Joan executed; France rallies and expels English within 22 years
