Marco Polo Bridge Incident

Imperial Japan

July 7, 1937 ยท North China Theater

On the night of July 7, 1937, Japanese troops on maneuvers near the Marco Polo Bridge outside Peking claimed a soldier was missing and demanded entry to the nearby Chinese-held town of Wanping. The Chinese refused. After shots were exchanged in the darkness โ€” their origin still disputed โ€” Japanese forces attacked. The skirmish lasted days, but it was the trigger for an eight-year war that would kill 20 million people.

Battle of Shanghai

Imperial Japan

August 13, 1937 ยท Central China โ€” Shanghai Theater

Chiang Kai-shek deployed China's best German-trained divisions to hold Shanghai against the Japanese, calculating that fighting in the international settlement would bring Western intervention. Three months of brutal urban combat in the streets and rice paddies of Shanghai destroyed the cream of China's modern army. Japan prevailed but at enormous cost โ€” losses that shocked Tokyo and shattered the illusion of a quick victory.

Fall of Nanjing

Imperial Japan

December 13, 1937 ยท Central China โ€” Nanjing Theater

After Shanghai fell, Japanese forces advanced rapidly up the Yangtze River toward China's capital. Chiang Kai-shek evacuated the government to Wuhan and then Chongqing, ordering General Tang Shengzhi to defend the city. Tang's defense collapsed within days. On December 13, 1937, Japanese forces entered Nanjing and began six weeks of systematic murder, rape, and destruction that the world came to call the Rape of Nanjing.

Chongqing Bombing Campaign

Republic of China

February 18, 1938 ยท Southwest China โ€” Chongqing Theater

Japan bombed China's wartime capital Chongqing continuously from 1938 to 1943 in the world's first sustained strategic terror-bombing campaign against a civilian population. Japanese aircraft flew 218 separate raids over five years, killing an estimated 10,000โ€“25,000 civilians and destroying much of the city. The bombings were designed to break Chinese morale and force Chiang Kai-shek to negotiate. They failed completely โ€” and hardened Chinese resolve.

Battle of Taierzhuang

Republic of China

March 24, 1938 ยท North China โ€” Xuzhou Theater

At the small walled town of Taierzhuang in Shandong province, Chinese forces under General Li Zongren encircled and mauled two Japanese divisions that had overextended during their advance toward the railway hub of Xuzhou. Fighting in the rubble of the town's ancient walls, Chinese troops annihilated over 16,000 Japanese soldiers in what became China's first significant victory of the war โ€” and a massive propaganda triumph.

Yellow River Flood (Huayuankou Incident)

Republic of China

June 9, 1938 ยท Central China โ€” Yellow River Theater

Facing overwhelming Japanese forces advancing toward the railway hub of Zhengzhou, Chiang Kai-shek made the catastrophic decision to dynamite the Yellow River dikes at Huayuankou. The resulting flood inundated eleven counties across three provinces in minutes, creating an inland sea that temporarily halted the Japanese advance. But the human cost was staggering: an estimated 400,000 to 900,000 Chinese civilians drowned or died of subsequent famine and disease.

Battle of Wuhan

Imperial Japan

June 11, 1938 ยท Central China โ€” Wuhan Theater

The Battle of Wuhan was the longest and largest battle of the entire war โ€” a four-month struggle for China's temporary wartime capital fought across land, river, and air over hundreds of miles. Japan committed over 350,000 troops; China fielded more than a million defenders. Though Japan ultimately captured Wuhan in October 1938, it came at a cost that convinced Tokyo the war in China could not be won by conventional military means. The fall of Wuhan ended the mobile phase of the war.

Battles of Changsha

Republic of China

September 17, 1939 ยท South China โ€” Hunan Theater

General Xue Yue defended Changsha against four separate Japanese offensives between 1939 and 1944, winning three of them. His 'Tianlu formation' (a tactical system of elastic defense, feigned retreat, and encirclement) inflicted catastrophic losses on Japanese forces in 1939, 1941, and 1942. The city finally fell in 1944 during the Ichigo Offensive. Xue Yue became known as 'Tiger of Changsha' โ€” the most successful Chinese defensive commander of the war.

Battle of Zaoyang-Yichang

Imperial Japan

May 1, 1940 ยท Central China โ€” Hubei Theater

General Zhang Zizhong led a daring counterattack across the Han River to relieve Chinese forces encircled by Japanese armies advancing toward Yichang. Outnumbered and surrounded, Zhang Zizhong refused to retreat even as his forces were overwhelmed. He died in combat on May 16, 1940, shot multiple times while directing a rearguard action โ€” the highest-ranking Chinese officer killed in the entire war. His death shocked China and made him its greatest martyr general.

Operation Ichigo

Imperial Japan

April 19, 1944 ยท Central and South China Theater

Operation Ichigo was Japan's largest land offensive of the entire war โ€” 500,000 troops launched across Central and South China with the goal of destroying the US airbases from which Chiang Kai-shek had allowed General Claire Chennault's Fourteenth Air Force to bomb Japan. The operation overran all four targeted US airfields, linked Japan's continental holdings from Manchuria to Singapore, and dealt China's already weakened armies crushing defeats. It also destroyed the last illusions that Chiang's government was capable of effective military resistance.

Japanese Surrender

Republic of China

September 2, 1945 ยท Pacific โ€” Tokyo Bay Theater

Japan's formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945 ended eight years of war in China. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, combined with the Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria, had broken Japan's will to fight. China's representative, General Hsu Yung-chang, signed as one of the Allied powers โ€” but the peace brought no rest. Within weeks, Chinese Communist and Nationalist forces were maneuvering for position in a civil war that would consume another four years.
