War of the Spanish Succession

When the last Habsburg King of Spain died without an heir, Louis XIV of France seized the opportunity to place his grandson on the Spanish throne — threatening to unite the crowns of France and Spain under Bourbon rule. A Grand Alliance of England, the Dutch Republic, the Holy Roman Empire, and Portugal took up arms to stop him, producing some of the most brilliant generalship in European history and reshaping the continent's balance of power.
