Biography
Appointed commander of the IRGC Quds Force after the US assassination of Qasem Soleimani in January 2020, Ghaani inherited the most powerful instrument of Iranian foreign policy — the network of proxy militias, intelligence operations, and covert military support that had made Soleimani the most consequential military figure in the Middle East. Ghaani was by temperament and style very different from Soleimani — more cautious, less theatrical — but managed the Quds Force through the chaos of October 7's regional fallout, the strikes on Hezbollah, and now the US nuclear strikes. He coordinated Iran's proxy retaliation through Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iraqi militias.
