Biography

The second African American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General CQ Brown was a career fighter pilot who had commanded Pacific Air Forces and served as Air Force Chief of Staff before his appointment as Chairman. He oversaw the military planning for Operation Midnight Hammer — the most complex multi-domain strike operation in the US military's history. As a former F-16 pilot, Brown understood the operational challenges of long-range strike operations and brought Air Force operational expertise to the targeting and execution debates at the Pentagon and NSC.

Did you know?

He flew combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and was known for a deeply personal memo — 'I Am a Black Man Who Happens to Be the Air Force Chief of Staff' — written after George Floyd's murder in 2020, which became one of the most widely circulated statements by a senior US military officer on race in America.

Key Battles

Strike on Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant

United States victory

June 22, 2025 · 200 total casualties

Fordow housed thousands of advanced IR-6 centrifuges enriching uranium to near-weapons-grade levels. Its depth made it the hardest target on Iran's nuclear map. Whether the strikes destroyed the facility or merely its top levels became the central post-strike intelligence debate, with implications for whether further strikes would be needed.

Strike on Natanz Nuclear Complex

United States victory

June 22, 2025 · 150 total casualties

Natanz had been sabotaged twice before — by the Stuxnet computer worm (2010) and by a physical explosion attributed to Israeli intelligence (2021). A direct US military strike was categorically different in scale and international consequence. Iran's entire centrifuge inventory was concentrated here.

Strike on Isfahan Nuclear Research Center

United States victory

June 22, 2025 · 80 total casualties

Isfahan represented the upstream end of Iran's nuclear supply chain. Destroying conversion capacity alongside enrichment facilities was intended to prevent rapid reconstitution — the lesson of previous, more limited strikes on Iran's program.

Iranian Drone Swarm vs. US Carrier Strike Group

United States victory

June 23–24, 2025 · 5 total casualties

The drone swarm attacks confirmed Iran's intent to demonstrate a credible threat to US naval power projection without achieving a catastrophic strike. Iran's investment in Shahed-series drones — proven in Ukraine — gave it a numerically saturating capability that modern warships' limited magazine depth struggles to counter economically. The episode intensified US Navy review of drone defense doctrine.
