Al-Qaeda operatives hijacked four commercial aircraft and crashed two into the World Trade Center in New York, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers fought back. 2,977 victims and 19 hijackers were killed — the deadliest terrorist attack in history.
