The Bicesse Accords and the Return to War

1991 – 1992 · Luanda and nationwide Theater

Peace collapses after the 1992 election; the war resumes with new ferocity.

1991 – 1992

With the Cold War over and foreign forces gone, the MPLA and UNITA signed the Bicesse Accords in 1991, agreeing to a ceasefire and multiparty elections. When the MPLA won the 1992 vote and Savimbi rejected the result as fraudulent, UNITA returned to war — plunging Angola back into fighting even more intense than before.
