Biography

One of Cuba's most decorated generals and a 'Hero of the Republic,' Arnaldo Ochoa commanded the Cuban expeditionary force in Angola during the climactic Cuito Cuanavale campaign, helping to orchestrate the massive reinforcement and the aggressive Cuban armoured push toward the Namibian border that turned the strategic tide against South Africa. His fate after the war was extraordinary and dark. In 1989, soon after returning from Angola a hero, Ochoa was suddenly arrested, tried for drug trafficking and corruption in a sensational show trial, and executed by firing squad. Many observers believed the real reason was that the popular, independent-minded general had become a potential rival to Castro. His downfall cast a long shadow over the triumphalist narrative of Cuba's Angolan adventure.

Key Battles

Battle of Cuito Cuanavale

November 1987 – March 1988 · 6,000 total casualties

Both sides claimed victory, but Cuito Cuanavale broke the momentum of South African intervention and, by threatening Pretoria's forces on the Namibian border, helped force the negotiations that led to Namibian independence and the withdrawal of both Cuban and South African armies from Angola. It became a symbol, across Africa, of the defeat of apartheid's military power.
