Fidel Castro
MPLA Government (Cuba/USSR)

Fidel Castro

Leader of Cuba; architect of the Cuban intervention

Born: August 13, 1926 · Birán, Cuba
Died: November 25, 2016 · Havana, Cuba
Education: Law degree, University of Havana
Pre-war: Revolutionary and Prime Minister/President of Cuba
"Angola is the most beautiful cause a revolutionary could fight for."

Biography

The Cuban leader made Angola the great overseas cause of his revolution. In 1975, as South Africa invaded, Castro launched Operation Carlota, airlifting thousands of Cuban troops across the Atlantic to save the MPLA — a stunning projection of power by a small Caribbean nation. Over fifteen years some 300,000 Cubans served in Angola, the largest foreign military deployment by any developing country. Castro personally directed the reinforcement of Cuito Cuanavale in 1987–88, gambling tens of thousands of his best troops to break the South African offensive and, in his telling, to strike a blow against apartheid itself. The Cuban intervention was decisive in the MPLA's survival and in the negotiations that freed Namibia, and Castro regarded Angola as his proudest internationalist achievement — a source of enormous prestige across Africa, however costly in Cuban lives.

Did you know?

He named the Angolan intervention 'Operation Carlota' after a slave who led a Cuban uprising in 1843 — framing it as a debt repaid to Africa for the slave trade.

Key Battles

Operation Savannah

MPLA Government (Cuba/USSR) victory

October 1975 – March 1976 · 2,000 total casualties

Operation Savannah brought South Africa and Cuba into direct confrontation and internationalised the war from its very start. The Cuban intervention that defeated it made Cuba the decisive foreign force on the MPLA side for the next fifteen years.

Battle of Cuito Cuanavale

November 1987 – March 1988 · 6,000 total casualties

Both sides claimed victory, but Cuito Cuanavale broke the momentum of South African intervention and, by threatening Pretoria's forces on the Namibian border, helped force the negotiations that led to Namibian independence and the withdrawal of both Cuban and South African armies from Angola. It became a symbol, across Africa, of the defeat of apartheid's military power.
