Biography

Charismatic, ruthless, and utterly relentless, Jonas Savimbi led the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) for the entire length of the civil war. A gifted orator fluent in several languages, he built UNITA into a formidable guerrilla army among the Ovimbundu people of the central highlands and secured the backing of both apartheid South Africa and, in the Reagan years, the United States, who hailed him as an anti-communist freedom fighter. But Savimbi was also a warlord who funded his war with 'blood diamonds,' ran a personality cult, and repeatedly rejected peace when it denied him power — walking away from the ballot box in 1992 and plunging Angola back into its bloodiest years. For twenty-seven years he proved impossible to defeat, surviving countless offensives, until government troops finally cornered and killed him in a firefight in 2002. His death ended the war within weeks — the one thing no treaty had achieved.

In the 1980s he was feted in Washington and met President Reagan at the White House, celebrated by American conservatives as a 'freedom fighter' against Soviet expansion.

Key Battles

Battle of Cuito Cuanavale

November 1987 – March 1988 · 6,000 total casualties

Both sides claimed victory, but Cuito Cuanavale broke the momentum of South African intervention and, by threatening Pretoria's forces on the Namibian border, helped force the negotiations that led to Namibian independence and the withdrawal of both Cuban and South African armies from Angola. It became a symbol, across Africa, of the defeat of apartheid's military power.

The Bicesse Accords and the Return to War

1991 – 1992 · 5,000 total casualties

The collapse of the Bicesse peace showed how deeply the war had become a purely internal power struggle no longer sustained by the superpowers. The post-election fighting of 1992–94 was the bloodiest phase of the entire conflict.

The Final War and the Death of Savimbi

MPLA Government (Cuba/USSR) victory

February 22, 2002 · 3,000 total casualties

Savimbi's death ended the war almost overnight. Within weeks UNITA signed a ceasefire and disarmed, transforming into a political party. After twenty-seven years and perhaps half a million dead, Africa's longest Cold War proxy conflict was finally over.
