Israeli forces of the Carmeli Brigade advance on Jenin in the Jezreel Valley, seeking to cut off Iraqi forces entering from the north. After initial success capturing the town, Israeli forces are driven out by an Iraqi armored counterattack supported by artillery — the first time Israeli forces had faced a modern Arab army with armor in open terrain. Iraqi infantry reinforcements and armor superiority at this phase of the war proved decisive. The Israelis withdrew with significant losses.
