Biafran Humanitarian Airlift

June 1968 · Biafran Heartland / Uli Airstrip Theater

Largest humanitarian airlift in Africa; global media attention on famine; inspires founding of MSF; insufficient to prevent mass starvation

June 1968

As the Nigerian blockade produced mass starvation, a coalition of church organizations organized a covert nighttime airlift into Biafra. Flying without navigation lights to avoid Nigerian MiGs, relief aircraft landed at the improvised Uli airstrip — nicknamed 'Annabel' — bringing in food, medicine, and supplies. At its peak, the airlift was landing dozens of flights per night, becoming the largest humanitarian airlift since the Berlin Airlift.
