May 29, 1966
Following a counter-coup in July 1966 that overthrew the Igbo-dominated military government, northern Nigerian soldiers and civilians turned on the Igbo population living in the north. In two waves — May and September–October 1966 — an estimated 30,000 Igbos were killed and over a million fled south to the Eastern Region, setting the psychological foundation for Biafra's secession.
