The Battle of Magersfontein was a catastrophic British defeat during 'Black Week' — the most humiliating seven days in British military history. General Koos de la Rey innovated a defensive tactic that would reshape warfare: instead of occupying the hills as the British expected, he positioned 8,000 Boers in concealed trenches at the base of the Magersfontein ridge. Lord Methuen's Highland Brigade — marching in close formation in the dark to achieve surprise — stumbled into this invisible defensive line at point-blank range before dawn. The Highlanders were massacred in the darkness, unable to advance, unable to retreat, pinned by fire they could not see. Their commander Major General Wauchope was killed in the first minutes. After hours of futile effort, the survivors retreated.
