Biography

The great leader of Saxon resistance to Charlemagne, Widukind was a nobleman of the Westphalian Saxons who for years personified his people's ferocious struggle to keep their independence and their pagan gods. Again and again, whenever Charlemagne withdrew, Widukind returned from refuge among the Danes to raise fresh revolts, burning churches and cutting down Frankish garrisons — most spectacularly the rising of 782 that destroyed a Frankish army and provoked the Massacre of Verden. But the relentless Frankish machine — its campaigns, deportations, and savage laws — ground the Saxons down. In 785 Widukind at last despaired and submitted, accepting Christian baptism with Charlemagne himself as his godfather. He then vanishes from the record. In later ages, especially in Germany, he was transformed into a national hero — a symbol, variously, of Saxon freedom, of resistance to foreign domination, and, more darkly, of Germanic identity.

Did you know?

Once his fierce enemy, later German tradition turned him into a revered ancestral hero, and he was even, ironically, venerated as 'Blessed Widukind' for the Christianisation his defeat brought about.

Key Battles

The Massacre of Verden

The Frankish Empire victory

782 · 4,500 total casualties

The Massacre of Verden was meant to terrorise the Saxons into submission, but it did the opposite, provoking years of fiercer resistance. It remains the darkest stain on Charlemagne's reputation, and its memory would be grotesquely revived by German nationalists over a thousand years later.

The Submission of Widukind

The Frankish Empire victory

785 · 2,000 total casualties

Widukind's baptism marked the symbolic conquest of Saxony and the triumph of Charlemagne's policy of conversion by the sword. Yet Saxon revolts flared again for years afterward, and the true pacification would require more decades and mass deportations.
