Phases
December 11–12, 1862
Burnside’s pontoons arrived a fatal week late — long enough for Lee to entrench 72,000 men on the heights behind the town. Engineers bridging the Rappahannock are picked off by Barksdale’s Mississippi sharpshooters until infantry cross in the pontoon boats themselves — the first opposed river crossing in American history — and clear the town house by house while 150 Union guns on Stafford Heights level it.
