The Battle of Emesa

272 · Syria (Emesa, modern Homs) Theater

Roman victory; the Palmyrene Empire is destroyed and the East recovered.

272

The energetic soldier-emperor Aurelian marched east to reclaim the Roman provinces from Palmyra. After beating the Palmyrene heavy cavalry at Immae by feigning retreat to exhaust their armoured horsemen, he defeated Zenobia's main army at Emesa and drove her back to Palmyra, which he then besieged and took. Zenobia was captured trying to flee to Persia.
