Battle of Hattin

July 4, 1187 · Galilee Theater

Decisive Muslim victory; the Crusader field army destroyed, opening the way to retake Jerusalem.

July 4, 1187

Saladin lured the main field army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem across a waterless plateau in the July heat, then surrounded it near the twin hills called the Horns of Hattin. Maddened by thirst and harried by fire and arrows, the crusader army was annihilated. King Guy was captured, the relic of the True Cross was taken, and Saladin personally executed the notorious Raynald of Châtillon.
