Battle of Mansurah

February 1250 · Egypt (Nile Delta) Theater

Muslim victory; the Seventh Crusade destroyed and King Louis IX captured.

February 1250

King Louis IX's Seventh Crusade invaded Egypt, aiming to strike at the heart of Ayyubid power. At Mansurah a rash charge by Louis's brother Robert of Artois into the town's streets was ambushed and destroyed by the Mamluk soldier Baibars. The crusade then collapsed; disease and encirclement forced the entire army to surrender, and King Louis himself was captured and ransomed.
