The Fall of Acre

April – May 1291 · Levantine Coast Theater

Decisive Mamluk victory; the last major mainland stronghold of the Kingdom of Jerusalem falls.

April – May 1291

The Mamluk sultan al-Ashraf Khalil brought an enormous army and siege train against Acre, the last great Crusader city. After six weeks of bombardment and mining, the Mamluks stormed the walls in May 1291. The defenders, including the military orders, fought to the end; the Templar Grand Master was killed, and the survivors were slaughtered or enslaved as the city fell.
