Diverted by debt, ambition, and Venetian scheming, the Fourth Crusade never reached the Holy Land. Instead it attacked Constantinople, the greatest Christian city in the world, and in April 1204 stormed and sacked it for three days — looting its churches, melting its bronzes, and shipping its treasures and relics west.
