June – July 1099
After a three-year march of unimaginable hardship, the surviving crusaders reached Jerusalem, held by a Fatimid garrison. Suffering from thirst and heat, they built siege towers from scarce timber and, on 15 July 1099, stormed the walls. The capture was followed by a notorious massacre, the soldiers slaughtering Muslim and Jewish inhabitants in the streets and in the al-Aqsa Mosque.
