Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch

May – September 14, 1629 · Brabant Theater

The impregnable marsh fortress falls; the Dutch pump a swamp dry to take it.

May – September 14, 1629

's-Hertogenbosch sat in a marsh and was thought impregnable — no one had ever taken it. Frederick Henry drained the marsh. He dammed the rivers, built forty kilometres of siege works around the town and a second ring facing outward against relief, and pumped the swamp dry with windmills, then mined the walls. It fell in four months.
