Biography

Piet Hein went to sea as a boy, was captured by the Spanish, and spent four years chained to an oar as a galley slave before being exchanged. He came back and made a career out of it. Rising through the Dutch West India Company, he raided Spanish and Portuguese shipping across the Atlantic and twice attacked Salvador in Brazil. In September 1628 he did what no one had ever done: he cornered the Spanish treasure fleet — the annual bullion convoy that paid the Army of Flanders — in Matanzas Bay in Cuba and took it almost without a shot. Eleven million guilders in silver, gold, indigo and cochineal. The Republic funded its army for eight months on it and took 's-Hertogenbosch the following year with the proceeds; Spain's admiral was executed for losing it. Hein, unimpressed by the celebrations, observed that the same crowd would have hanged him if the wind had changed. He was killed a year later in a skirmish with Ostend privateers in the Channel, hit by a cannonball on his own quarterdeck. Dutch children still sing about him — *Piet Hein, Piet Hein, zijn naam is klein* — which is a strange fate for a former galley slave who financed a siege by robbing an empire.

Did you know?

He is the only man who ever captured the Spanish silver fleet. He had spent four years as a Spanish galley slave before he did it, and the 11 million guilders he took paid for the Dutch army that captured ’s-Hertogenbosch the next year.

Key Battles

The Capture of the Silver Fleet

Dutch Republic & Allies victory

September 8, 1628 · 10 total casualties

The only time the Spanish silver fleet was ever captured, and it was a Dutch privateer war fought 7,000 km from the Netherlands. The plunder funded the Republic's army for eight months and paid for the campaign that took 's-Hertogenbosch the next year. It also stated the Dutch strategy plainly: the war was global, Spain's empire paid for Spain's armies, and the way to beat the tercios in Brabant was to rob them in the Caribbean.

Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch

Dutch Republic & Allies victory

May – September 14, 1629 · 9,000 total casualties

The war's engineering masterpiece and the reason Frederick Henry was called the Stedendwinger — the Forcer of Cities. It is the Dutch answer to Ostend, done better: where Spain spent three years and an army on a sand heap, the Dutch spent four months and took the strongest fortress in the Low Countries. Paid for, in part, with Piet Hein's Cuban silver.
