Battle of the Plains of Abraham

September 13, 1759 · Northern Colonies Theater

British Victory — Both generals die; Quebec falls; New France doomed

Phases

September 12–13, 1759 — Night

Wolfe discovers the Anse au Foulon, a narrow cove where the 175-foot cliffs are scalable. On the night of September 12, 4,500 British soldiers embark in flat-bottomed boats and drift silently down the St. Lawrence. A French sentry challenges them — a Scottish officer answers in fluent French. The boats reach the cove; soldiers haul themselves up the cliff path in the darkness.

  • British boats drift down the St. Lawrence — silent approach
  • Anse au Foulon — the secret path up the cliff
  • British troops climb the cliff in darkness
  • Quebec City — French garrison unaware
