In the most catastrophic defeat in Roman imperial history, Arminius lured three full legions — Legio XVII, XVIII, and XIX — into an ambush in the dense forests and marshes near the Kalkriese Gap. Over three days of continuous fighting in rain and mud, the Germanic confederation pressed the Roman column from all sides as it attempted to march through terrain that nullified every Roman tactical advantage. Artillery, formation, and cavalry were useless in the tangled forest. Varus, surrounded and out of options, fell on his own sword. Of 20,000 Roman soldiers, fewer than a thousand reached safety. Legions XVII, XVIII, and XIX were never reconstituted — their numbers were retired forever from the Roman army's order of battle.
