Drusus Reaches the Elbe

9 BC · Central Germania Theater

Rome's deepest penetration into Germania; Drusus's subsequent death ended the momentum of the Augustan conquest policy.

9 BC

In his fourth and final campaign, Drusus pushed deeper into Germania than any Roman before him, reaching the Elbe River — the boundary Augustus had designated as Rome's new eastern frontier. According to Roman sources, a Germanic woman of supernatural height appeared to Drusus at the Elbe and prophesied his death. Whether vision or metaphor, Drusus turned back and died shortly afterward from injuries sustained when his horse fell during the withdrawal. Augustus mourned him as his greatest general.
