Newly appointed to the Rhine command, Germanicus launched a night raid into Marsi territory. The Roman force fell on communities during celebrations of the goddess Tamfana and devastated settlements across a wide area. Four neighboring peoples attacked the Romans during their withdrawal but were repulsed. Tacitus presents the raid as a surprise slaughter and gives no numerical toll. Mallovendus appears later in Tacitus as a surrendered Marsian leader who disclosed the location of a lost legionary eagle; he was not the named commander of this raid, and the eagle was not recovered during the 14 AD attack.
