Autumn 9 AD · Lippe River, Germania Theater
Autumn 9 AD
Emboldened by Teutoburg, Germanic warriors swept across the province attacking Roman forts. The garrison of Fort Aliso on the Lippe River — soldiers, civilians, and camp followers — held out under siege while the rest of the province collapsed around them. Prefect Lucius Caedicius organized the defense, rationed dwindling supplies, and repulsed repeated assaults. When starvation threatened, he led the garrison in a night breakout, fighting through the encircling Germanic warriors and eventually reaching the Rhine. The fort itself was abandoned and burned by the Germanic forces.
