Tiberius Pacifies Germania

5 AD · Weser Region Theater

Roman success; Germanic tribes from the Rhine to the Elbe appeared pacified — a deceptive calm before catastrophe.

5 AD

Following a five-year withdrawal from active operations in Germania, Augustus dispatched his adopted son Tiberius to systematically reassert Roman control up to the Elbe. In a coordinated land-sea campaign, Tiberius marched legions overland while a fleet sailed the North Sea and up the Ems and Weser rivers to rendezvous inland. Germanic tribes submitted or scattered before the methodical advance. Among the Roman auxiliary officers serving with distinction in this campaign was a young Cheruscan nobleman, recently granted Roman citizenship, named Arminius.
