Biography
A soft-spoken Gandhian and Nehru's successor as prime minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri was widely underestimated as a mild, diminutive figure — until the 1965 war revealed his steel. When Pakistan's Operation Gibraltar sought to seize Kashmir, Shastri authorised the escalation that carried Indian troops to the outskirts of Lahore, rallying the nation with the slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.' He led India to a creditable stalemate against a better-equipped foe and then, under Soviet mediation, signed the Tashkent Declaration restoring the pre-war lines in January 1966. Hours after signing, he died suddenly of a heart attack in Tashkent — a death so unexpected that it spawned lasting conspiracy theories. He is remembered as a figure of great personal integrity who guided India through its first full-scale war since independence.
