Biography

The architect of the Kargil War, General Pervez Musharraf was Pakistan's army chief in 1999 and the driving force behind the secret plan to seize the Kargil heights across the Line of Control — reportedly without the full knowledge of the civilian prime minister, Nawaz Sharif. The gamble aimed to internationalise Kashmir and cut India's vital highway to Ladakh. It ended in military defeat and diplomatic isolation as the world condemned the intrusion and pressed Pakistan to withdraw. The recriminations over Kargil helped fracture the relationship between Musharraf and Sharif — and months later Musharraf seized power in a coup, ruling Pakistan as president for nearly a decade. Kargil, his greatest gamble, shadowed his career: celebrated by some in the army, blamed by others for a costly and futile misadventure.
