Biography

A former IDF Chief of the Southern Command who commanded operations in Gaza during the 2014 war, Gallant became Defense Minister in Netanyahu's government. His announcement on October 9 — that Gaza would face a 'complete siege: no electricity, no food, no water, no gas' — became one of the war's most controversial statements and was cited in international legal proceedings. Gallant reportedly clashed with Netanyahu repeatedly over the war's direction, particularly on hostage deal negotiations, and was dismissed in November 2024.

Did you know?

He was briefly fired by Netanyahu in March 2023 during the judicial overhaul crisis — only to be reinstated after mass protests — then fired again in November 2024 amid disagreements over the Gaza war.

Key Battles

Battle of Gaza City

Israel / IDF victory

October 27 – December 2023 · 15,000 total casualties

The battle exposed the scale and sophistication of Hamas's underground infrastructure, the extreme difficulty of urban warfare in densely populated areas, and the intense international scrutiny Israel faced over civilian casualties. The IDF's discovery of tunnel infrastructure beneath Al-Shifa hospital became one of the war's most contested moments.

Battle of Khan Younis

Israel / IDF victory

December 2023 – April 2024 · 20,000 total casualties

Khan Younis was the operational center of Hamas's military command. The battle's intensity and civilian cost drove the ICJ's emergency orders demanding Israel ensure humanitarian access. The hostage crisis became increasingly acute as families of the remaining captives held mass protests in Tel Aviv.

Rafah Offensive

Israel / IDF victory

May 7, 2024 – October 2024 · 25,000 total casualties

The Rafah offensive achieved the stated military objective of destroying Hamas's last organized military formations and killing its senior leadership. But it also produced the war's most devastating humanitarian conditions, with aid effectively blocked for months. The killing of Sinwar removed Hamas's mastermind but did not end the conflict or produce a hostage deal.
