As Kitchener's army neared Khartoum, the Khalifa's general Mahmud entrenched a large force in a thorn-fenced zariba on the Atbara river. Kitchener's infantry stormed the position after an artillery bombardment, breaking the Mahdist army and capturing Mahmud himself.
