Biography

Boris Johnson became Ukraine's most vocal European champion in the critical early months of the war. While German leaders argued for limiting arms transfers and French President Macron pursued dialogue with Moscow, Johnson flew to Kyiv in April 2022 — an unannounced visit that shocked European allies and electrified Ukrainians. He pushed for heavier weapons earlier, encouraged Ukraine to resist rather than negotiate, and reportedly played a role in convincing Zelensky to reject a March 2022 peace deal that would have required significant territorial concessions. His domestic political scandals eventually brought him down, but his Ukraine legacy remained one of genuine consequence.

Key Battles

Battle of Kyiv

Ukraine victory

February 24 – March 30, 2022 · 12,000 total casualties

The failed Kyiv offensive proved Ukraine could resist Russia's military, demolished the myth of Russian military invincibility, and galvanized Western military aid. The discovery of mass atrocities in liberated Bucha and Irpin hardened international opinion and ended any ambiguity about the war's character.

Siege of Mariupol

Russia victory

February 24 – May 16, 2022 · 25,000 total casualties

Mariupol's fall gave Russia a land bridge from the Donbas to Crimea, achieving a key strategic objective. But the 82-day resistance embarrassed Russian timelines, tied down major forces, and the Azov fighters became symbols of Ukrainian defiance. The treatment of prisoners raised war crimes concerns.
