Biography

Russia's top military officer and the architect of what became known in the West as 'the Gerasimov Doctrine' — a theory of modern hybrid warfare blending conventional force, information operations, and political subversion. Gerasimov was a central planner of the 2022 invasion, expecting a rapid collapse of Ukrainian resistance. When the initial assault failed spectacularly, he survived the institutional fallout that claimed other commanders. In January 2023, he was appointed overall commander of the Russian operation in Ukraine, replacing Surovikin. He oversaw Russia's shift to attritional warfare and the grinding campaigns that defined 2023–24.

Did you know?

The 'Gerasimov Doctrine' that made him famous in Western think tanks was based on a misreading of his 2013 essay — which he intended as analysis of Western hybrid warfare against Russia, not a prescription for Russian strategy.

Key Battles

Battle of Kyiv

Ukraine victory

February 24 – March 30, 2022 · 12,000 total casualties

The failed Kyiv offensive proved Ukraine could resist Russia's military, demolished the myth of Russian military invincibility, and galvanized Western military aid. The discovery of mass atrocities in liberated Bucha and Irpin hardened international opinion and ended any ambiguity about the war's character.

Battle of Avdiivka

Russia victory

October 2023 – February 17, 2024 · 30,000 total casualties

Avdiivka's fall was Russia's largest territorial gain since Bakhmut and demonstrated the consequences of Ukraine's ammunition crisis. It opened potential routes deeper into Donetsk Oblast and emboldened Russian forces at a time when Western resolve was being questioned.
