Biography
Born in Russia and trained at the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School, Syrskyi became one of Ukraine's most celebrated battlefield commanders. As commander of the Kyiv garrison in 2022, he directed the defense that stopped Russia's capital assault and earned the nickname 'General of Victory.' He subsequently commanded the spectacular Kharkiv counteroffensive in September 2022, recapturing 8,000 km² in days. After Zaluzhnyi's dismissal in February 2024, Zelensky appointed Syrskyi commander-in-chief — making a man born in Russia the overall commander of Ukraine's war against Russia.
