Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (2024–Present)
"Every meter of Ukrainian land is sacred."
Born in Russia and trained at the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School, Syrskyi became one of Ukraine's most celebrated battlefield commanders. As commander of the Kyiv garrison in 2022, he directed the defense that stopped Russia's capital assault and earned the nickname 'General of Victory.' He subsequently commanded the spectacular Kharkiv counteroffensive in September 2022, recapturing 8,000 km² in days. After Zaluzhnyi's dismissal in February 2024, Zelensky appointed Syrskyi commander-in-chief — making a man born in Russia the overall commander of Ukraine's war against Russia.

The failed Kyiv offensive proved Ukraine could resist Russia's military, demolished the myth of Russian military invincibility, and galvanized Western military aid. The discovery of mass atrocities in liberated Bucha and Irpin hardened international opinion and ended any ambiguity about the war's character.
September 6 – October 2, 2022 · 8,000 total casualties
The Kharkiv counteroffensive shattered the narrative of inevitable Russian triumph. It demonstrated that Russian forces, while capable of attritional warfare, were vulnerable to maneuver operations that struck where they were thin. The operation was enabled by HIMARS strikes that degraded Russian logistics for months and by NATO intelligence and planning support. The speed and scale of the advance exceeded anything seen in European warfare since WWII's final campaigns.
August 6 – October 2024 · 20,000 total casualties
The Kursk incursion demonstrated Ukraine's continued capacity for offensive action and political creativity. It complicated Russian narratives about the war, created internal Russian pressure, and established Ukraine's willingness to bring the war to Russian territory. North Korean troop deployment marked a significant escalation of the conflict's global dimensions.
