Biography
Coming to the throne as a teenager after his father's deposition, Edward III reopened the Scottish war by backing the puppet claimant Edward Balliol. He won a crushing victory in person at Halidon Hill in 1333, where his men perfected the tactic of dismounted men-at-arms flanked by longbowmen that would win his French battles too. Edward soon turned his ambitions to France and the throne he claimed there, launching the Hundred Years' War — but the Scottish and French wars were entangled through the Auld Alliance, and it was his lieutenants who captured King David II at Neville's Cross in 1346 while Edward besieged Calais. Unable to conquer Scotland outright, he eventually released David for a great ransom, leaving Scottish independence battered but unbroken as his attention fixed on France.
