Biography
Chosen king in 1292 by Edward I, who arbitrated Scotland's disputed succession precisely so he could dominate the winner, John Balliol reigned as a vassal whose every act Edward overruled. Pushed too far — commanded to provide troops for England's French war — the Scots forced Balliol into an alliance with France, the beginning of the 'Auld Alliance,' and defied their overlord. Edward's response was the invasion of 1296 and the rout at Dunbar. Balliol was made to abdicate in a humiliating ceremony, the royal arms literally torn from his tabard — earning the enduring nickname 'Toom Tabard,' empty coat. Imprisoned, then exiled to his family estates in France, he never returned; but he remained the legitimate king in whose name Wallace and others fought, and his shadow over the crown complicated Bruce's claim for years.
