Uesugi Kenshin

Biography

A devout follower of the Buddhist war deity Bishamonten who considered himself the god's earthly incarnation, Kenshin ruled Echigo Province and fought Takeda Shingen to a standstill across five inconclusive battles at Kawanakajima over more than a decade — including a fourth engagement in 1561 so ferocious that later accounts describe Kenshin riding alone into the Takeda command tent to duel Shingen personally with his sword against Shingen's iron war fan. He never joined Nobunaga's alliance and remained one of the most formidable independent daimyō in Japan, at one point defeating an Oda army sent against him at Tedorigawa in 1577 and reportedly composing poetry mocking Nobunaga's pretensions afterward. Nobunaga is said to have regarded him as one of the few commanders genuinely capable of stopping the unification outright, and was reportedly relieved rather than saddened to learn of his death. He died suddenly in 1578, by most accounts of illness, while apparently preparing a large-scale march that might have directly challenged Nobunaga's expanding domain. He had adopted two heirs rather than marrying and producing his own, and the resulting succession war between them — the Otate Rebellion — tore Uesugi power apart from within at exactly the moment it might have mattered most, removing one of the last independent brakes on Nobunaga's project just as thoroughly as his death had.
