One of the earliest major Soviet offensives into Kunar province ended in disaster as Mujahideen ambushes devastated Soviet motorized columns in the narrow mountain valleys. The battle demonstrated that conventional Soviet tactics — designed for European plains warfare — were catastrophically ill-suited to Afghan terrain, a lesson the Red Army struggled to internalize for years.
