Pizarro's third expedition south made landfall on the island of Puná and fought its people in a sharp engagement that left several Spaniards dead and many wounded, including Hernando Pizarro. From Puná the expedition crossed to Tumbes and began the march inland — into an empire that had just finished tearing itself apart.
