December 7, 2024
On December 7, 2024, opposition forces announced full control of Homs and its notorious central prison. Homs was the strategic keystone of Assad's Syria: the junction where the highway from Damascus meets the roads west to the Alawite heartland and the Russian bases at Tartus and Hmeimim. Taking it severed the capital from the coast and from the regime's own community. The city that had been called the 'capital of the revolution' in 2011, besieged and starved for three years, was retaken in a day. Detainees walked out of the prison into crowds searching for relatives who had disappeared a decade earlier.
